5 Gentle Questions to Ask an Aging Parent

Few conversations are as tender — or as easy to put off — as the one about getting a little more help at home. Bring it up too bluntly and it can feel like a loss of independence. Wait too long and small problems become big ones.

The good news: it rarely takes a single hard talk. It takes a series of gentle, curious questions, asked over time. Here are five to start with.

1. "What's part of your week that you'd love to hand off?"

This reframes help as relief, not decline. Most people have a chore they quietly dread — the grocery run, the pile of mail, the drive across town. Starting there makes support feel like a gift rather than a judgment.

2. "How are you getting to your appointments these days?"

Transportation is often the first thing to get harder, and one of the easiest to support. Asking opens a practical door without putting anyone on the defensive.

3. "Is there anything around the house that's become a hassle?"

A lightbulb that's hard to reach. A router that keeps dropping. A closet that needs sorting. These small frustrations are exactly the kind of thing a companion can quietly take off the list.

4. "Who do you talk to during the week?"

Connection matters as much as any errand. This question surfaces how much company someone actually has — and whether a regular, friendly visit might brighten the week.

5. "Would it help to have someone you could count on, same time each week?"

Consistency is the heart of it. Not a rotating cast of strangers, but one familiar person who knows the routine. For many families, that's the idea that finally lands.

There's no perfect script, and no need to solve everything in one sitting. The goal is simply to open the door — gently, and with plenty of room for your parent to walk through it in their own time.
